B.C. Man Revamps “I Am Not American” T-Shirt with Bold New Designs

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

More than 20 years after making headlines with his original ‘I Am Not American’ T-shirt, Trevor Wilson of Surrey, British Columbia, is back with two bold new designs. Aimed at helping Canadians assert their identity and clear up common misconceptions abroad, these freshly updated shirts breathe new life into a timeless message.

Wilson, an expat Aussie who has lived in Surrey for 30 years, operates the website iamnotamerican.com, where he sells T-shirts featuring his trademarked slogan translated into multiple languages. The message is simple: the wearer is not American.

The updated website now displays two exciting “I Am Not American” designs. The first features a bold red maple leaf, flanked by the phrase in both English and French. The second design revitalises Wilson’s original “I Am Not American” T-shirt, now including translations in English, French, Arabic, Chinese, Danish, German, Greek, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Slovak, and Spanish. These designs are available in a range of sizes and come in white, light grey, or black.

Wilson believes the shirts are especially relevant today, as Canadians traveling abroad are often mistaken for Americans. With global attitudes toward the U.S. shifting in recent years, these T-shirts offer a way for Canadians to assert their identity and celebrate their “Canadian-ness”.

The idea for the shirts came from his experiences during a 1992 international trip, when Wilson noticed American backpackers frequently wearing Canadian flags on their packs in an attempt to pass themselves off as being from the Great White North.  During the same trip, multiple people had assumed that even he was an American. Several years later he created the first “I Am Not American” T-shirt, featuring eleven translations of the phrase.

Wilson takes pride in keeping production local. The shirts are designed and printed in Surrey, on T-shirts manufactured by a Calgary-based supplier. Even the shipping materials are Canadian-made, and orders sent to buyers via Canada Post using Expedited Parcel or Xpresspost. The only exception to his ‘Made-In-Canada’ commitment is a small number of larger shirts, which are currently sourced from a SMETA audited ethical facility in Mexico, to fill size gaps that Canadian manufacturers were unable to accommodate.
